Applicant Tracking System-Reason why your resume gets rejected.

Did you hear back from the dream company you applied? If “No” is the answer, then you are one among the 75% of  applicants whose resumes were immediately disqualified after their submission. What went wrong with your resume? “It failed to satisfy the Applicant Tracking System”.It is used by most of the companies to do all the heavy lifting for the HR department. We must submit an “ATS-friendly Resume” to get over this stop stone.

What is Applicant Tracking System?

It is a computer software program that scans the information on resume and awards a score to each applicant based on how well their resume matches the job description.

How it works?

When you submit your resume, the ATS stores your resume and adds an entry to the database. When the recruiter wants a candidate for particular job, he searches through ATS using some keywords. The keywords include the skills and experiences specific to the particular job opening.ATS starts searching the resumes on its database, picks the relevant resume and ranks it.The higher the rank, higher are your chances.

Why it is used?

It eases the work of HR. Also, it saves Time, Paper and help them stay organised.

How to produce an “ATS-friendly Resume?”

Here are the tips to beat the ATS and ranks top at it.

Include keywords:

Closely read the job postings and include the ‘skills and qualifications’ described. It ranges from 20-25 words.

Focus on the body of resume:

Avoid using the header and footer to list your name, contact number or other information.Always focus on the body of resume.

Use standard titles:

Don’t be creative this time.ATS can’t always understand the unusual titles.Stick to common headings such as ‘Skills’, ‘Qualifications’, ‘Work experience”, “Objectives” etc…

Don’t use Abbreviations:

Since it’s a machine, it doesn’t understand our abbreviations. It is mandatory to present a full length of abbreviations.

Don’t start with numbers:

ATS doesn’t recognize information that start with numbers.Always introduce your contact details with headings: “Phone Number” and “Email”.Also don’t start anything with numbers (Example: Work experience starts with years).

Make it simple:

Tables, charts, text boxes and fancy bullets may not be read.Fonts must be black and easy-to read  with greater than 11 point. Use sans-serif fonts like Verdana or Tahoma instead of serif fonts like Times New Roman or Cambria. Also don’t underline anything on your resume.

Format your “Work Experience” data:

When listing your Work experience (Freshers may include their Internships,Inplant trainings here.), the Employer name must appear on the first line before the job title and the date should always appear to the right of the company name.

Make it relevant than random:

ATS is smart enough to find the loads of keywords added randomly to maximize the match. If it finds this random addition, it will trash your resume.

Try this:An action verb + a keyword + a fact or figure that resulted from your action

Make it Error-Free:

ATS isn’t a google to provide “Did you mean” option. It avoids reading when it is with spell errors.Double check your language.

Use simple  language:

Frame your resume mostly with Active voice and use generic terms regarding the job descriptions.

Don’t copy and paste:

A white text is visible  on your resume if you copy and paste anything on it.ATS will punish you for this by rejecting your application.

Don’t send as PDF:

Save your resume in Word (.doc or .docx) or text (.txt) files only.Resumes saved in .pdf may have the formatting messed up with ATS.

Add a Photo:

Recent statistics says that “Adding a professional photo will help ATS to track you on social media”.

Key word strategy:

Copy and paste the job description into sites like Wordle and TagCrowd . They will determine the right keyword to add on your resume.

General tips:

  •  Go to the company’s LinkedIn page and check out their employees. Look at the descriptions of their jobs as well as the company’s description. If you have similar skills and qualifications, list them on your resume.
  • Some ATS will scan your social media sites to rank you.So, include the relevant keywords and Professional Display Picture to help ATS find you quickly.
  •  Add important bits right at the top of your resume where he or she can quickly scan and understand the value you would bring the company.
